Episcopal Palace in Luçon

The Episcopal Palace in Luçon , a French city in the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region , was originally built in the 17th century and modified in the 18th and 19th centuries. The episcopal palace right next to the cathedral was added to the list of architectural monuments in France in 1906 as Monument historique .

The bishop's residence stands on the site of a monastery founded in the 7th century, of which the chapter house from the 13th century has been preserved. The two-storey building, which received its classicist facade under Bishop Richelieu , has two round towers on the park side that serve as stairwells. The central axis with three arched windows on the ground floor is closed by a triangular gable.

After a fire in 1753, the building ensemble was redesigned. Extensive renovation and modernization work took place from 1856 to 1879. During this time, the large hall on the upper floor was converted into a library, which today has around 40,000 volumes.
