The Bischofsplatz is a square in the old town of the central Hessian city of Limburg an der Lahn in the Limburg-Weilburg district .

The square was probably built in 1322 with the construction of today's city church (now Barfüsserkirche ), which was built for the Limburg Franciscan monastery , which has existed since 1232 . Its former building from the 18th century (meanwhile episcopal palace, today episcopal ordinariate) and the church today limit the square to the east. Until the 19th century there was still a walled cemetery in front of the Franciscan Church, and the first Limburg grammar school was located in front of the monastery building in 1636.

To the south, the Frankfurter Strasse connects , which led to the Hammerpforte , in front of which the Frankfurter Vorstadt (Hammervorstadt) arose from the 14th century . In the corner house at Frankfurter Straße 1 built at the end of this century, the famous town clerk Tilemann Elhen von Wolfhagen lived from 1392 at the latest ; from the 17th to the second half of the 20th century the ground floor was used as a bakery. In the southwest, Bischofsplatz is bordered by the large estate of the Trombetta merchant family on Fleischgasse , which branches off to the west and whose origins also go back to the 14th century.

The west side forms a group of five half-timbered houses from the late 15th to 17th centuries, which were built on older barrel vaults . While the corner house at Bischofsplatz 9 ( House Byron ) has been occupied since the end of the 14th century, the houses at Bischofsplatz 1 , Bischofsplatz 3 and Bischofsplatz 5 are only recorded for the 17th century.

To the north of the house at Bischofsplatz 9, Barfüßerstraße goes west, and Bergstraße connects to the north . Its confluence is lined by the corner houses Bergstrasse 1 and Bischofsplatz 6 . There has been evidence of development on the parcels since the early 15th century; today's buildings date from the 16th and 18th centuries and are plastered so that their half-timbering is not exposed. The house Bischofsplatz 6 together with the house Kirchgasse 1 delimits the Bischofsplatz to the north, between the latter and the city church the Kirchgasse goes off to the east in the direction of Rossmarkt .

The Bischofsplatz belongs to the overall complex of the old town and Frankfurt suburb and is therefore a listed building . In addition, all adjacent houses are independent cultural monuments according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
