The Heidelberg Bismarck Column is a listed observation tower that was built in Heidelberg in 1903 . The Bismarck monument is located on the southern slope of the Heiligenberg above the Philosophenweg .

history

The name "Bismarck's Column" for the tower can be traced back to the 1899 competition organized by the German Student Union , which was intended to encourage the erection of as many fire columns as possible (and not observation towers). Wilhelm Kreis won this competition with his model "Götterdämmerung", the Heidelberg Tower is one of 47 towers that were built according to this design. The tower bears an imperial eagle relief with the serpent of discord. At the top of the tower is a cast iron fire bowl with a diameter of 2.5 meters. The Bismarck Column was renovated in 1985.

On January 19, 2003, the tower was 100 years old. In June 2003 an anniversary party was celebrated at the Bismarck Column, with a memorial fire lit in the fire bowl. Inside the tower you can climb up and have a view of the old town of Heidelberg.
