history

In Wiehl in 1907 the building of a national monument was considered. A Bismarck Tower Construction Committee was formed under the chairmanship of the businessman Eugen Rothstein, which submitted the building application for the tower to the district master builder in Gummersbach on October 7, 1908 and work began on October 27. For the construction of the national memorial as a lookout tower with a fire bowl made of wrought iron , donations of 60,000 gold marks were collected from the citizens of Wiehl alone within a very short time .

The design by the Gummersbach- Rebbelroth architect Otto Bubenzer was selected, the construction work was carried out by the master builders Dabringhausen and Becker. Bergische Grauwacke was used as building material; the building material was provided free of charge by the Bergisch-Markische Steinindustrie in Cologne.

The foundation stone was laid on July 30, 1908, the inauguration of the tower took place on June 20, 1909. For the first time, the fire was lit in the bowl in the tower head.

Description of the tower

The observation tower has a regular hexagonal floor plan and was originally 15.6 m high. Bergische Grauwacke was used as building material . The keystone of the tower with the Bismarck coat of arms, directly above the entrance door, was made from one piece by stone carver Julius Schenk.

Originally an oak spiral staircase led to the viewing platform. This was replaced in 1949 by a concrete and metal staircase (top) with a total of 71 steps. A wrought iron fire pan with a diameter of 1.80 m, which was only fired with logs, was attached to this platform.

In 1947 and 1975 necessary renovation measures were carried out. The fire bowl was removed again and a twelve-sided viewing platform was built up. This increased the tower to 16.80 m. The reopening took place on April 10, 1976. In 2002 the outer facade was extensively renewed by a master roofer (grandson of the builder). A complete renovation was carried out in 2005 for 42,000 euros and a new steel staircase was installed.
