The Bisse du Torrent-Neuf (also Bisse de Savièse ) is a bisse ( French Bisse ) near the town of Savièse in the Swiss canton of Valais . The lower course above Savièse is used to this day together with a tunnel through the Prabé mountain that went into operation in 1935 .

The Bisse du Torrent-Neuf is probably the most impressive bisse in the canton of Valais because of the structurally demanding lines of the upper course in the rock faces above the Morge , which was in operation until 1934 . This obsolete section in the Morge valley had since been abandoned to decay, was partially reconstructed beginning in 2005 and made accessible to the public in 2008 with the parallel hiking trail.

Construction and operation

The bisse was built in sections between 1430 and 1448. A significant change in the course took place in the 16th century. In the process, a new spring intake was created on the Nétage below the old version and the confluence of the Dui brook in order to increase the flow rate. However, the transfer of the water from this point towards Saviése required the crossing of the Branlires cliff . Apart from the dropping of a short section of the pipeline attached to beams at a critical point through the Moujérin tunnel, there are no records of changes in the route until 1880. In the 1880s, the Bisse was extended through the mountain so that the source was now directly on the Morge , which greatly increased the delivery rate.

In the traversed rock walls, the alternating layers of limestone and slate are not horizontal, but inclined to the south. Due to the solubility of the limestone in the flowing water, the water had to be carried in all limestone layers on supporting beams and attached wooden channels, while a trench could be dug directly in the rock in layers of slate.

In order to be able to completely and finally throw off the maintenance and repair-intensive upper reaches of the dangerous terrain, a tunnel was created through the Prabé mountain. This was put into operation in 1935 and was blessed by the local priest on August 4th of this year. On April 28, 1934, water was last transported over the upper reaches of the Morge valley.

Reconstruction of the route in the Morge valley and upgrading to a hiking trail

In 2005, the Association Pour la Sauvegarde du Torrent-Neuf ('Association for the Preservation of the Bisse du Torrent-Neuf') was founded to preserve the legacy of the 500-year-old bisse and to gradually reconstruct and at least partially reconstruct the abandoned section in the Morge valley to be expanded into a hiking trail.

In 2008, a first section of the route in the Morge Valley, starting from the chapel, Sainte-Marguerite, was opened to the public and has been gradually expanded since then. The hiking trail is accessible from May to November every year, but must not be passed during precipitation or other bad weather.

Due to the special geological conditions, a new, safe route for the hiking trail by means of suspension bridges was chosen at several critical points.

In some places, numerous remains of wood from the original water system, which was in use until 1934, can still be seen today.

additional

The spectacular tour in the upper reaches of the Bisse du Torrent-Neuf has been the subject of a large number of articles and photographs since it was abandoned - although it has since been inaccessible. Before giving up the business, a certain Louis Seylaz made the bisse with his friend, the photographer Charles Paris, in 1934. He published his impressions in the article "Adieux au Bisse de Savièse" in the Gazette de Lausanne on April 28, 1934. This concluded with the words:

“A l'automne, le vieux bisse, cinq fois centenaire, sera abandonné pour toujours. Pendant des années encore, le chenal désaffecté restera aux parois du Prabé, jusqu'à ce que le temps inexorable ait fait disparaître à tout jamais ce témoin de la prodigieuse audace, de l'invincible ténacité d'une commune alpestre. »

“In autumn, the centuries-old bisse is given up forever. For a while the wire will still hang in the rock face of the Prabé, until inexorable time will forever remove this witness of the incomparable daring and insurmountable tenacity of a mountain community. "

- Louis Seylaz : "Adieux au Bisse de Savièse"

The historical photographs of Charles Paris and numerous other photographers are now in the audiovisual collection in the regional branch of the Valais media library in Martigny .
