Diocese of Middelburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former Diocese of Middelburg , located in what is now the Netherlands , was created in 1561 from areas of the current Archdiocese of Utrecht , to which it was also subordinate as a suffragan . The historical basis was the 1123 as a canon pen founded Norbertine -Abtei of Middelburg . Their abbots were infulfilled , so they had a prominent position compared to other abbots. The small diocese was largely in the county of Zealand and, like the Premonstratensian Abbey, went under as a result of the Reformation and the Spanish-Dutch War when William of Orange conquered Zealand.

The Kasteel van Westhoven was the residence of the only bishop of Middelburg, Nicolaas de Castro , his episcopal church was the Nordmünsterkirche St. Pieter .

In February 2018, the former diocese was rebuilt by the Holy See as the titular seat . A first assignment of this titular bishopric has not yet taken place.
