Paleness was a Berlin no-wave band that experimented with sounds, noises, tapes and voices. Her musical experiments and ideas flowed into bands such as Einstürzende Neubauten and Die Krupps .

history

Paleness was founded in Berlin in 1979 by the then 13-year-old Alexander von Borsig alias Alexander Hacke and Richard Hirsch . The band had their first appearance at the Antifascist Festival on September 30, 1979 at the TU Berlin. The aim was to experiment with sounds, rhythms and language.

From December 1979 they played with Eva-Maria Gößling , ex Mania D , in the Berlin club Blue Moon and from January 1980 also with the New York performance artist Arleen Schloss in SO36 in Berlin . Eva Gößling brought the idea of ​​“Hypnotic Music” to Berlin from her collaboration with 18-year-old SAMO alias Jean-Michel Basquiat in New York. The aim was to repeat sounds, melodies and words so often that a meditative mood arose, which was suddenly broken up by a small deviation.

The 100% synthetic tour through galleries in Germany and Austria in April 1980 polarized audiences with radical sounds and texts. In the same month Alexander Hacke became a founding member of the Einstürzende Neubauten. Eva Gößling went to Düsseldorf and worked there with Brigitte Bühler and Xaõ Seffcheque on the further development of paleness. In December 1980 the first single Love You Saxophone was released . "Contemplative jazz modernism with a beautiful psychedelic desert saxophone," wrote Diedrich Diederichsen in Sounds . In April 1981 the Düsseldorf cassette label Klar! 80/81 published Pale Live (Buhuu 8) "Long, monotonous, repetitive figures, with the saxophone always articulating fears, pointed and fragile."

"The handling of intensities, the structure of the four long pieces is reminiscent of free jazz in the mid-sixties," wrote Sounds 05/1981. Bernward Malaka , bassist Eva Gößling knew from the production of Stahlwerkinfonie der Krupps , where she played the saxophone, worked on the No-Düsseldorf sampler MASSA . Here Paleness are represented on an LP with 5 pieces, about which D. Diederichsen wrote: “Their imaginative Kaputt-Jazz covers an area not yet represented in this country”. Paleness showed the Super 8 film S-Bahn Berlin 1980 during their concerts and played it live. René Tinner, sound engineer of the steel works symphony, recommended Joachim Witt the pale saxophonist for his film music Inflation im Paradies . In 1982 Eva Gößling moved to London, paleness dissolved, Brigitte Bühler worked on malaria! -Video Money Money .
