Black Butler - A devil from a butler ( Japanese 黒 執事 , Kuroshitsuji ) is a Japanese real-life film from 2014 , by the directors Kentarō Ōtani and Kei'ichi Satō . It is based on the manga of the same name, Black Butler , but is based on an alternate story.

action

In the near future (2020) the world will be divided into two nations, one western and one eastern. The western nation is shaped by an iron monarchy . She has many spies (also called "Queen's Watchdogs") who operate in the Eastern Nation; Shiori Genpō is one of those spies. She pretends to be a man for a long time, so she can run her parents' toy company.

She took all this hard work to avenge the death of her parents. The demon Sebastian Michaelis helps her in this endeavor , but Shiori had to sell her soul to him. Together they want to do an assignment from the queen. This assignment leaves Shiori pondering, because people - mostly with a good reputation - are found who are inexplicably mummified and as if they had been dead for years. Gradually, they come to the realization that there is more to this case than initially assumed.

Differences to the manga and the anime

The film differs (in terms of the initial situation and the protagonists ) from the manga or anime. While the manga or anime is about the story of the 12-year-old boy Ciel Phantomhive in the 19th century, the film deals with the story of the young Shiori Genpō and takes place in the near future.

background

The film was first shown in Japanese theaters on January 18, 2014. In Germany, the film has been distributed by Tiberius Film GmbH since August 7, 2014 .

reception

The producers are accused of giving the visual aspect a higher priority than the plot.

"Black Butler is a luxuriant, somewhat self-loving film adaptation of a cult manga that relies too much on pictures, because on a gripping story and / or lovable characters - nice to look at, but somehow soulless apart from the final melancholy."

While the website Literrra.info ascribes a certain "overacting" to the actors, but considers the representation by and large to be conventional.

“You can't deny the actors a certain overacting, but compared to other Japanese films, BLACK BUTLER presents itself overall as very moderate and conventional. [...] The director turns on the fight scenes, but on the whole is quite inconspicuous. "

- Literra

The film grossed 5.2 million in Japan USD one.
