Black Castle ( Irish An Caisleán Dubh ) is the ruin of a low castle in the city of Wicklow in County Wicklow, Ireland . The ruin is located immediately southeast of the port.

history

After the Anglo-Norman conquest of Ireland in the 1170s, Maurice FitzGerald received the settlement of Wicklow. He had the Black Castle built as an inland fortress on the harbor.

In the rebellion of 1641 , the castle was briefly in the hands of clans O'Byrne , O'Toole and Kavanagh , but was soon abandoned when the British troops were approaching the city. Sir Charles Coote, 1st Baronet , who led the English troops, demonstrably had the townspeople slaughtered "wildly and indiscriminately" out of revenge. One of those acts of "wanton cruelty" is believed to have been that an unknown number of people were taken into a building in the city, which was then deliberately set on fire so that all of the people inside were burned to death. Although no written document records this particular detail of Coote's attack, a narrow alley known in the local area as "Melancholy Lane" is believed to be the location where this incident took place.
