The Black Potts Railway Bridge is a railway bridge at Windsor, Berkshire , England over the River Thames . The Staines to Windsor Line from London Waterloo Station via Staines-upon-Thames ends immediately after the bridge at Windsor and Eton Riverside Railway Station . The bridge crosses the Thames between Old Windsor Lock and Romney Lock .
history
In 1849 the Windsor Staines and Richmond Railway applied for a bridge to be built at this point. The bridge was opened in 1850. The opening was delayed because one of the pillars collapsed the day before the last construction inspection. The bridge crosses the Black Potts Ait island in the middle of the river . Originally the bridge had ornamental cast iron arch ribs, but these corroded and were replaced by sober wrought iron solid wall girders , which greatly changed the appearance of the bridge.
Black Potts Viaduct
Immediately to the east of the bridge is the Black Potts Railway Viaduct . The viaduct had to be extensively protected when the Jubilee River was built, as the mouth of the new canal flows through the brick arches of the previously built Victorian viaduct.
