Black River is a Jamaican city at the mouth of the Black River of the same name in Black River Bay . The parish with 4,200 inhabitants is the capital of the Saint Elizabeth Parish . The most important sources of income are tourism and the timber industry.
Founded in the 17th century, the city quickly became an important seaport for shipping the sugar grown in the hinterland. Waterloo House was the first electrified Jamaican house in 1893. The owner of Waterloo House was also the first to import a car to the island.
Black River is surrounded by bog , which is an important habitat for various threatened creatures.
