Blasco Núñez de Vela
Blasco Núñez de Vela or Blasco Núñez Vela (* 1490 in Ávila , Spain ; † 1546 near Quito , Ecuador ) was the first viceroy of the viceroyalty of Peru (1542-1546).
Life
In 1542, Blasco Núñez de Vela was appointed Viceroy of Peru by King Charles V of Spain ; after the phase of conquistadors , he was supposed to install a Spanish administration capable of acting. Núñez de Vela is portrayed as quite conceited, selfish, paranoid and presumptuous, he wanted to have all power in the colony to himself. On May 17, 1544, he reached Lima and replaced the previous provisional governor Cristóbal Vaca de Castro , whom he immediately had arrested in Callao on charges of having sympathy for the Gonzalo Pizarro rebellion .
Blasco Núñez de Vela wanted to enforce the Leyes Nuevas ("New Laws") of 1542 without compromise. The “New Laws” were rejected and opposed by the conquistadors because they restricted the power that the conquistadors had as encomenderos over the Indian population and transferred all rights to the land to the Spanish crown. Gonzalo Pizarro , Francisco Pizarro's brother , ultimately led around 700 of them to the battle of Añaquito (near Quito ).
In this battle that brought Blasco Núñez de Vela to death, the numerically weaker defenders were defeated. The dead man's head was cut off and carried through the streets, impaled.
