location

The cemetery is located west of the historic Quedlinburg old town, north of the Munzenberg on the Zwergkuhle street.

Architecture and history

The cemetery was built between 1841 and 1843 and is entered in the Quedlinburg monument register. It was established as a replacement for the abandoned inner-city cemetery at the Sankt-Blasii-Kirche . The cemetery was inserted into the surrounding slopes on an artificially lowered area.

From the cemetery gate a path leads west to the funeral place . There is a sandstone altar with a height of one meter and a width of 1.86 meters. On the front you can read the words Be true - Until death . A neo-Gothic cross with a height of 1.70 meters and a width of one meter is attached to the cafeteria . The vertical bar is decorated with two palm branches and a halo. In front of the cross is a sandstone replica of an open Bible .

Remnants of the original planting are still preserved in the cemetery. Overall, the cemetery has a forest-like impression. The enclosure consists of a sandstone ashlar wall from the middle of the 19th century into which a gate system with a forged gate is inserted.

In addition, there are several historical graves in the complex, including a large tomb in the design of Art Nouveau . A tomb made of porcelain in the form of a small book was recovered and is located in the cathedral coast. Another tomb was moved to the urn community grave of the market cemetery .

The fountain in the Blasii cemetery was built in the 1910s. It is three meters wide and 1.50 meters high. The fountain, decorated with oak leaves and acorns and a goblet, bears the inscription Don't forget the dear dead .

In 2012 the Blasii cemetery was included in a list of 111 must-see places in Saxony-Anhalt due to its special atmosphere .
