Blattegert in winter, in the background Ulm-Mähringen

The (or the) Blattegert is a planar natural sight between Ulmer districts Upper Eselsberg and Mähringen in the tubs Augstletweg, Blattegert and riser fields. It is an abandoned limestone quarry ( bank limestone of the White Jurassic ) with semi- arid grassland , fringing vegetation and stands of woody succession. Building material for the Ulm federal fortress was obtained here.

natural reserve

It was only recognized in its value between 2001 and 2005 and freed from vegetation, it is now (as of 2020) part of the landscape conservation program of the city of Ulm and is grazed with sheep, goats and donkeys as planned in order to prevent further growth. In Blattegert several protected plant species occur (eg. As cowslips and Pasque ) and rare butterfly species (eg. As red fritillary , Satyrium Spini and Redbrown Heath ). The Apollo butterfly is to be resettled here.
