The Blue Bearded Moss ( Calypogeia azurea ) is a liverwort from the family Calypogeiaceae in the order Jungermanniales .

Identifying features

The blue Bartkelchmoos grows in lying, blue-green lawns, the individual shoots of which are up to 4 mm wide and up to 5 cm long. The tightly tiled flank leaves are a little wider than they are long, widest at the base, usually with a blunt tip or, more rarely, short bidentate. The hexagonal lamina cells of the flank leaves are about 30 to 45 µm wide and 35 to 65 µm long and contain 3 to 7 blue oil bodies. The sub-leaves, divided up to 1/2 or 3/4 into 2 lobes, are a little wider or up to about twice as wide as the stem.

Occurrence

The lime-avoiding liverwort colonizes fresh to damp or wet locations: loamy soil, humus, swampy and boggy areas, less often rotten wood. The occurrences in Europe are mainly in the montane area and in the mountains. Further occurrences are in Asia, North Africa and North America.
