The blue neck herb ( Trachelium caeruleum ) is a species of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae).
features
The blue neck herb is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 60 to 100 centimeters. The evergreen species forms a Pleiokorm root . The stem is erect, glabrous, few-leaved and reddish. The leaves are ovate to broadly lanceolate, up to 7 inches long, pointed and double-toothed. The upper leaves are sessile. The inflorescence is a loose, flat or hemispherical panicle with a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. The crown is blue, pale purple or, more rarely, white.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32 or 34.
Occurrence
The blue neckwort occurs in the western Mediterranean on old walls at altitudes from 0 to 1600 meters. The distribution area includes the Azores, Madeira, Morocco, Algeria, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Sicily. In France, Great Britain and New Zealand the species is a neophyte.
use
The species is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens. It has been in culture since at least 1640. There are several varieties.
