The blue-crowned amazon ( Amazona ventralis ) is a species of parrot from the subfamily of the New World parrots . The basic color of the plumage of this 28 centimeter Amazon species is green. The feathers have a black border on the head, chest and top. The forehead and the reins of the eyes are white on the head. The ear covers and the upper eye strips are black in this species. The lower abdomen is red-brown. The arm-wings and the arm-wing covers are blue in this amazon species, with the feathers on the outer flags being lined with green. The species has no sexual dimorphism .

Blue-crowned amazons are one of the endemic species of Amazon parrots. Their distribution is limited to the island of Hispaniola and some adjacent islands. In Puerto Rico this kind has been introduced. Their habitat ranges from the arid plains to the mountain forests. Similar to other Amazon parrots, the parrots that live in pairs, family groups and occasionally small flocks are nomadic in their area of distribution. They eat fruits, seeds, berries, nuts and possibly also flowers. In doing so, they occasionally come to mind on areas used for agriculture. Information on the reproduction of these animals is only available from captivity. The young birds then hatch after a breeding period of 25 days.

The population of the animals is estimated at around 4,000 to 5,000 individuals. The stocks in the Dominican Republic have fallen drastically. The species is considered almost extinct in Haiti . There were offspring in human care in the breeding stations of the very rare Puerto Rico Amazon . Blue-crowned amazons with breeding experience were also used as wet nurses to raise this rare Amazon species.
