Stone framework in blaundos

Blaundos ( Greek  Βλαῦνδος ) was an ancient small town in the border area between the landscapes of Lydia and Phrygia in Asia Minor . Its ruins are about 20 km south of Uşak near the present-day village of Sülümenli in Turkey.

Little is known from prehistory , the city first appeared on coins in Hellenism , but still under the name Mlaundos. Apparently Macedonian mercenaries were settled in the city. 188 BC Blaundos fell into the domain of Pergamon , from which Rome it was in 133 BC. Chr. Inherited. At the end of the Roman Civil Wars, veterans were likely to have settled in Blaundos.

From the Neronian era to the reign of Maximinus Thrax, Blaundos minted its own coins again.

The ruins of Blaundos are still worth seeing today. In addition to a city gate and the remains of the city wall, the remains of a half-timbered building are still preserved, the theater, stadium and individual temples can still be seen. Blaundos was examined from 2000-2002 by a survey by the German Archaeological Institute , which found, among other things, that Blaundos received an extensive fortification system in the 4th century that enclosed about half of the imperial city. However, this downsizing was not a sign of economic decline, as the lavish residential buildings within the wall ring show. Only in the 6th century did the settlement change; the residential development in the city became more fragmented, existing buildings were exploited for Spolia .
