The blue stripes surgeonfish ( Acanthurus lineatus ) is a kind from the family of surgeonfish . It is common in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific , from South Africa to Hawaii . In the Red Sea it is replaced by the Arabian surgeonfish ( Acanthurus sohal ). He inhabits the outer reefs with coral growth and avoids rock reefs. Young animals live in shallow water, adults avoid the tidal area.

Like all surgeon fish, the blue stripe surgeonfish has a laterally flattened body with a terminal mouth. The sides of the body are striped bright blue-yellow with a pure light blue belly, the dorsal fin is yellow. The anal and pelvic fins are orange. It becomes 38 centimeters long.

The males have fixed territories of 4–12 m² in size, which they inhabit with several females. The fish constantly controls the boundaries of the area and drives away conspecifics and food competitors such as other surgeon fish, rabbit fish and butterfly fish .

He lives vegetarian on thread algae.

Aquarium keeping

Most doctor fish species are very demanding pets in the aquarium . The blue stripe surgeonfish is particularly problematic because of its aggressive behavior towards other fish that are the same size or larger.
