Bleaker Island ( Spanish Isla María ) is an island in the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic . Bleaker Island is located southeast of East Falkland . The name is a corruption of the previous name "Breaker Island", as the waves break on the island.

Bleaker Island is a long narrow island about 2070 hectares in size, 19 km long and 2.5 km wide. The longest and most beautiful beach is the 2 km long Sandy Bay. The coasts are characterized by small cliffs and various types of beach .

Flora and fauna

The northern half of the island is an officially designated nature reserve . Bleaker Island offers a protected habitat for many animal species. 49 bird species have been cataloged so far, 37 of which breed on the island, including magellanic and donkey penguins . There are also many blue-eyed shags and rockhopper penguins .

A total of 79 plant species were also recorded, including Cypripedioideae and other orchids and tussock .
