The Bleiken Chapel near Simplon was built in 1717 by pastor Johann Peter Tscherrig. Johann Peter Tscherrig was pastor in Simplon from 1715 to 1725. The construction date is chiseled into the lintel of the chapel.

history

The origin of the chapel goes back to a legend according to which Mary appeared to the warriors with the baby Jesus in a battle. As a result, the enemies were frightened and fled. When a chapel was to be built near the battlefield to commemorate this event, the construction workers' tools were brought to a higher place every night by invisible hands; and this is where the chapel stands today. There is a bell in the tower of the chapel. The ringing of the bell can be heard in the village 1.5 km away.

The Bleiken Mother of God Chapel, also called Marienkapelle uf dä Bleiku , belongs together with the Eggen Chapel in honor of St. John the Baptist and the Mother of God Chapel in Gabi to the parish of St. Gotthard of Simplon-Dorf. During the summer months, mass is held weekly in the Bleiken chapel, usually on Mondays. On September 8th, the feast of the birth of the Virgin Mary is celebrated with a mass in the chapel .
