The Blok proti islámu (Block against Islam), abbreviated to BPI , is an Islamophobic movement in the Czech Republic . It now operates under the name Martin Konvička Initiative , named after its founder, the biologist Martin Konvička .

ideology

The “Block against Islam” is anti-Islamic and, according to Tagesspiegel, works closely with the German Pegida organization. Radio Prague describes the block as " right-wing extremist ".

development

The predecessor from 2015, Islám v České republice nechceme (We do not want Islam in the Czech Republic), was dissolved in 2016. The bloc played a key role in the preparation of a Europe-wide xenophobic "day of action" in February 2016.

In April 2016, around a hundred supporters of the “Block against Islam” and the xenophobic Pegida movement blocked the German-Czech border crossings at Cínovec - Altenberg and Kraslice - Klingenthal . Pegida leader Lutz Bachmann traveled to the blockade in Klingenthal. There were also protests in České Velenice (Gmünd) on the border with Austria . The supporters of the movement directed their actions against the proposals of the EU Commission for a European refugee policy .

In 2016, the “Block Against Islam” got into a dispute with the right-wing party “Dawn of Democracy” ( Úsvit přímé demokracie ). Konvička should be the top candidate in the regional elections in the Czech Republic in autumn 2016. Thereupon the anti-Islam bloc terminated its cooperation with the party. The Úsvit demanded up to 9.5 million crowns "contractual penalty" for the termination.

Party formation

The vice-chairman of the anti-Islam bloc, the sociologist Petr Hampl , founded the Alternativea pro Česko (ApČ, alternative for the Czech Republic) party in June 2016 . She wants to cooperate with the “Block Against Islam”. The German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) is regarded as a model for the ApČ .

Former Czech President Václav Klaus ( ODS ) spoke at the AfD federal party conference in Stuttgart in 2016. He supports the idea of founding a party based on the AfD model in the Czech Republic.
