Blue Giant ( Japanese ブ ル ー ジ ャ イ ア ン ト ) is a manga series by Shinichi Ishizuka , which was released in Japan from 2013 to 2017. It was continued with Blue Giant Supreme from 2017 to 2020 . The drama, translated into several languages, tells the story of a Japanese saxophonist .

content

In middle school, Dai Miyamoto plays in the basketball club. But when a friend takes him to a jazz concert, he becomes enthusiastic about the music. He begins to teach himself the tenor saxophone , although at first he can't even read sheet music. But he gets better quickly and resolves to become the best saxophonist in the world.

In Blue Giant Supreme, Dai travels to Munich after his successes in Japan to continue his path to become the best saxophonist. He wants to learn how jazz music is played in Germany and how he can inspire an audience here. He finds it difficult to settle in, even without any language skills, and to find a place to play at all. The reactions of the German jazz audience seem cool and distant to him. But then he meets Chris, who lets Dai stay with him and gives him his first appearance. He inspires the small audience consisting only of friends and thus secures further appearances.

publication

The series was published from May 2013 to August 2016 in the magazine Big Comic of Shogakukan . The chapters were later published collectively in ten volumes. A sequel started under the title Blue Giant Supreme in September 2016 in the same magazine and was completed in April 2020. It also appeared in eleven edited volumes. In May 2020, the second sequel Blue Giant Explorer started , again in Big Comic.

The manga was translated into French by Glénat and published. The sequel has been published in German by Carlsen Manga since May 2020 . The German publication of the first series is to follow. The sequel was brought forward in order to better address the German audience with Germany as the setting.

reception

The last of the anthologies in the first series sold over 100,000 times in the first two weeks. The volumes by Supreme sold more than 110,000 times in the first few weeks after publication. From April 2017 to March 2018, the series was one of Shogakukan's manga with the highest first edition, in the case of Supreme of 200,000 copies. In 2017, the series received the Shogakukan Manga Award for Best Manga for the General Audience. Previously, Blue Giant has been nominated twice for the Manga Taisho Award, 2018 for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2019 and the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angoulême .

For the sequel set in Germany, the illustrator had researched in Munich, many views of the city can be seen in the stories. Including scene bars, which have since been visited more frequently by Japanese tourists looking for the scenes of the manga. The operator of one of the bars also recognized himself in the stories. According to journalist Sabine Scholz, the sequel is particularly interesting for the German audience, as it takes a look at German customs and behavior. The manga is “to be recommended to a broad adult audience in terms of both content and appearance”, the “drawing style is more conservative, with a lot of realistic details and is reminiscent of well-known Japanese artists”. The series was also an example of the popular manga subject music in the Manga exhibition of the British Museum 2019. The creative representation of sound and music with which the performances of the musicians are staged, accompanied by Japanese onomatopoeia , which every reader is emphasized empathize with the music, but let each person have a different music in their heads.
