History

The settlement began in 1914 with a small orchard, a retail store and some holiday homes. When Lake Arrowhead was artificially created, the village began to grow too. Because of the numerous blue jays in the area , the place was called "Blue Jay" in 1934. However, it was at the local birds around the Steller ( Cyanocitta stelleri ), English Steller's Jay , not the more native to the East Blue Jay ( Cyanocitta cristata ), English Blue Jay . After the confusion was recognized, it was left with the original name.

Today Blue Jay is active in tourism with offers for tours in the San Bernardino Mountains as well as for water sports on Lake Arrowhead and organizes the "Blue Jay Jazz Festival" annually.
