The blood-bellied woodpecker ( Campephilus haematogaster ) is a woodpecker found in Colombia , Panama, and Peru . Its natural habitat are subtropical and tropical rainforests .

The woodpecker got its name from its dark red, blood-colored abdomen . The rest of the feathers are mostly black, with the exception of the white stripes on the back , which many other members of its genus also have. His head is covered by a black feather mask, separated from the rest of the body by two golden stripes, which in some females are continued to the neck . Black feathers also cover the neck.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are known so far.

  • Campephilus haematogaster splendens Hargitt , 1889 is widespread in Panama, western Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
  • Campephilus haematogaster haematogaster ( Tschudi , 1844) occurs in central Colombia, the east of Ecuador as far as central Peru.
