Blood soup
Blood soup or black soup ( Greek μέλας ζωμός mélās zōmós ) is the name of a main course of the Spartians .
The soup, a typical soldier's dish , consisted of spicy pork , blood , vinegar and salt and was one of the few dishes known by name of the male citizens of Sparta . The special thing was the associated use of a lot of pork. Pork was not uncommon, but in ancient Greece other types of meat ( sheep , goats , poultry , but also beef ) were consumed. Daily meat consumption, as in Sparta, was only possible for the wealthy in other Greek cities. After the fall of the Spartan state in the 2nd century BC The blood soup was long forgotten.
Today, blood soup is sold in jars and intestines, among other things, with meat and root vegetable broth, pearl barley , salt , spices , garlic and other ingredients added to the dish . A variant of the soup is also the black soup or the black sour .
