Blyxa octandra is a species of the frog-bite family(Hydrocharitaceae).

description

The stems are shortened or missing. The leaves are arranged in a basal rosette. They are linear, 6 to 60 centimeters × 5 to 7 millimeters in size and prickly towards the tip. The 20 or more leaf veins are only indistinctly visible. The spathe are 6 to 10 centimeters tall. Your stem is 20 to 120 centimeters long. The plants are diocesan , the flowers unisexual. A spathe contains one female or 5 to 10 male flowers. The sepals are reddish, linear and 9 to 10 × about 1.5 millimeters in size. The petals measure 2 to 2.5 inches or more. There are 9 stamens . The stamens are 2 to 5 millimeters long. The anthers are 1 to 2 millimeters long. The ovary is tightly cylindrical and 6 to 9 centimeters in size, together with a beak even 8 to 10 centimeters. The stylus are about 2 millimeters in size and hairy. The fruits measure 7.5 to 10 centimeters. The numerous seeds are elongated-elliptical and 1 to 2 × 0.5 to 1 millimeter in size.

The species blooms and produces fruit from May to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16 or 32.

Occurrence

Blyxa octandra is found in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, New Guinea, Vietnam, China (Guangdong, South Guangxi (Fangcheng), Sichuan, Yunnan) and Australia.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1802 by Roxburgh as Vallisneria octandra in: Pl. Coromandel 2: 34 (t. 165). Thwaites introduced it in 1864 as Blyxa octandra in the genus Blyxa . Synonyms but illegitimate names are Blyxa roxburghii Richard and Blyxa saivala Steudel .
