The Lichtenberger windmill is one of two remaining post mills in the area of today's town of Salzgitter . The mill is on the northern outskirts of the Lichtenberg district , not far from exit no.20 (Salzgitter-Lichtenberg) of the 39 motorway .

history

The mill was built in 1810 at its current location, the builder was Kotsasse and miller Christian Schaare. At that time, freedom of trade had been introduced in the Kingdom of Westphalia , to which Lichtenberg belonged at the time . As a result, you no longer needed a certificate of ability to run a mill and thus anyone could acquire such a patent (patent = right to exercise a trade) against payment of a tax. The mill is therefore also known as a patent mill, like the Söhlde post mill built in the same year .

According to a report from 1817, the mill had a milling operation , per day were about 30 Himten be ground into flour or meal (about 900 liters) of wheat or rye.

In 1858, master miller Carl Bosse bought the mill and built a house nearby. This was demolished again in 1975 because it had to give way to a road relocation in the course of the planning for the A39.

In 1944 the mill received an electric motor to drive the grinder. This year the mill was also listed for the first time. At the end of the 1950s, the mill was given up and due to the ongoing deterioration of the mill, the monument protection was lifted again. Only after the then Salzgitter Wohnungs-AG had agreed to restore the mill building, the mill was placed under monument protection again in 1964. The following year the mill was repaired, with the work being mainly limited to the outside area. In 1999/2000 the Mühlenbock and the wing cross were renewed.

Current

Today (2013) the mill belongs to the housing company TAG Immobilien AG . Since 2012, the supervising home district of Lichtenberg has offered visits to the mill during the German Mill Day and on the Day of the Open Monument .

Wing broken by storm in autumn 2015

In September 2015, one of the wings on the axle head broke in a storm. The wings and the wing cross were then dismantled by a mill builder, examined for damage and repaired. The wing cross was completely renewed, here larch wood was used instead of the oak wood that was previously used, as it is more weather-resistant. The wings were reassembled in May 2016.
