The Bodenwies ( 1540  m above sea level ) is the highest mountain on the Dürrensteig ridge , the easternmost part of the Upper Austrian Pre-Alps .

The Bodenwies rises in the area of the Upper Austrian municipality of Weyer , the nearest place in the hardly inhabited region is Altenmarkt near St. Gallen . The Bodenwies forms the highest peak of the striking, partly steeply sloping and around 20 km long ridge of the Dürrensteig ridge. This is part of the Weyerer arches and runs untypically for the Northern Limestone Alps in a north-south direction; In the northern part, the Almkogel ( 1513  m ) stands out as the second prominent elevation.

The summit-forming rock is the main dolomite . The Bodenwies is connected to the higher Reichraminger Hintergebirge ( Großer Höchstberg , 1724  m ) via the Mooshöhe ( 846  m ) to the west . To the south of the summit is the abandoned Viehalhochalm, to the east is the still managed Schüttbauernalm ( 1097  m ). The most popular route to the Bodenwies leads from the Viehaleralm ( 823  m ) over the panoramic northern ridge in 2½ hours to the summit.
