Bodil Gertrud Begtrup

Bodil Gertrud Begtrup (born November 12, 1903 in Nyborg , † December 12, 1987 in Copenhagen ; born Andreasen ) was a Danish politician , suffragette and diplomat .

Life

Begtrup studied political science at Copenhagen University. At the age of 23 she was the representative of the International Student Union in Geneva at the League of Nations . In 1929 she was elected to the board of the Danish National Women's Council, of which she later became president. From 1938 she was a permanent member of the Danish delegation to the League of Nations and then to the United Nations . There she represented the rights of women as a member of the Human Rights Commission and in 1946 was a founding member of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW). In 1948 she became Vice-President of the General Assembly and drafted the Declaration of Human Rights as a committee member . Begtrup worked for Denmark as a diplomat; 1959–1960 she was Denmark's ambassador to Austria . She continued to be involved in the women's movement and, among other things, helped prepare the World Women's Conferences in 1975, 1980 and 1985.
