Bodo Sperling passed the entrance examination at the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule Frankfurt, but then decided to study art history at the University of Tübingen .

Starting in 1980, the first pictures were made from crystals and crystal tablets. Since 1985 he has been using computers as a design tool. Two of his computer paintings can be seen in the Museum of New Art in Karlsruhe .

In November 1989, as spokesman for the board of the Federal Association of Visual Artists, Sperling was co-initiator of the East Side Gallery in the course of the negotiations on the merger of the two German artist associations BBK and VBK . A well-known, publicly accessible work was the section he painted on the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall , entitled The Transformation of the Pentagram into a Star of Peace in a Great Europe without Walls (East Side Gallery, Fig. 18).

In 1992 the 1st All-German Artists' Congress took place in Potsdam, to which Sperling was delegated as the official representative of the state of Hesse.

In 1991 he created a video installation at the state exhibition in Kassel which, according to the philosopher Thomas Metzinger, confronted the viewer with the "objective documentation of space-time". A steel basin was installed on a stone altar weighing tons, in which crystals formed from a boiling solution. The entire process was documented by an automatic camera over several weeks.

In 1992 he installed a five-meter-high mobile at the 1st All-German Artists' Congress in Potsdam , which, illuminated by slide projectors , created the impression of a constantly changing 3D film.

In the course of the renovation of the East Side Gallery in 2009, Sperling headed a resistance (Gründerinitiative East Side) of the artists whose works were removed from the wall and criticized the lack of transparency and poor financial resources of the artists as well as the violation of copyrights the planned restoration of the works of art. In May 2011, Sperling brought an action against the State of Berlin . The regional court dismissed the lawsuit. Sperling had hoped that his lawsuit would serve as a model for other artists. His lawyer spoke of cultural blackmail in this context.
