Geography and history
Bog Walk is located in a basin of the Blue Mountains , on a large limestone wall. The Rio Cobre , also known as the Copper River , runs through the city . To the north, the city of Linstead is in the immediate vicinity .
The city's name is derived from the Bog Walk Gorge , a high limestone gorge to the south . Originally founded by Spanish sailors , the place was first called Boca d'agua ( Spanish for: mouth of the water ). After Jamaica was conquered by English colonialists , the city got its current name. The town's main street is also called Bog Walk and was built in 1770. It is one of the oldest streets in Jamaica.
Infrastructure, economy
Bananas, pineapples, citrus fruits and sugar cane are grown in the Bog Walk area. The place is an important trading center for all kinds of fruit. Bog Walk is the largest milk producer on the island.
The Flat Bridge , which was built in the 18th century, is a bridge that is located on what is now the main road, the main connection point between Spanish Town and Ocho Rios . The bridge without a side barrier leads over the Rio Cobre and has only one lane. For a long time there was no system for navigating the bridge, so that there were regular disputes between motorists and serious accidents with fatal consequences. A traffic light system was installed in the 1990s.
Bog Walk is connected to the Jamaican railway system. The Gibraltar Tunnel , the longest rail tunnel in Jamaica , runs through the steep face south of the city .
