Linstead is a small town in inland Jamaica . The city is located in County Middlesex in the Parish Saint Catherine . In 2010 Linstead had a population of 22,757 and is the eighth largest city on the island.

Linstead lies in a basin in the Blue Mountains . The city lies between two other larger cities. Linstead borders Bog Walk to the south and Ewarton to the northwest . There is also a large bauxite open pit mine to the northwest of the city . In this region, the three cities, which are surrounded by several small towns and fields, form the largest settlements of which Linstead is considered an economic center.

Economy and history

Linstead is a commercial and economic center in the region and is known for its large weekly fruit and vegetable market. The farmers living in the area sell most of their earnings at this market, which is considered to be the largest in Saint Catherine. In the 19th century, the market was an important meeting place for wholesalers of coffee and allspice. It is also part of an old folk song called “Linstead Market” . The city also makes money from the mining of bauxite.

Linstead is connected to the Jamaican rail system.
