The borer beetles (Bostrichidae) represent a family of beetles . In Europe there are 47 species and subspecies. They are similar to the bark beetles (Scolytinae), but differ significantly in their antennae and eyes.

features

The beetles are 2 to 20 millimeters long and have elongated cylindrical and slightly flattened bodies and oval eyes. They are either strong, finely haired, or have no hair. The head of the animals is stretched slightly forward, said uncovered at the subfamilies Lyctinae and Polycaoninae and the subfamilies Dinoderinae Bostrichinae and through the throat plate is covered from above. Some species have winglets that do not cover the entire abdomen. Their antennae have 9 to 11 segments, the last two or three segments being thickened to form a club. These segments can be thickened like a comb in some species. Both the males and the females each have five tarsal links on all legs . The tarsi are usually long and in some species are partially overlapped by the tibia . These in turn usually have thorns and hooks on the first pair of legs.

Way of life and occurrence

The beetles drill into wood and are very warmth-loving. Some types, such as B. the cereal capuchins ( Rhyzopertha dominica ) are pests , because they eat not only wood but also books and their larvae , seeds and grain. The borer beetles sometimes reach a remarkable age. Grain capuchins can live up to 60 years, when their surface is heavily worn.
