Bohumil Herlischka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bohumil Herlischka ( April 25, 1919 in Čáslav , Bohemia - February 24, 2006 in Düsseldorf ) was a Czech opera director .

Life

During his time as senior director at the National Theater in Prague from 1951 to 1957, he made himself more and more unpopular with the government. Because of increasing difficulties he moved to the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He also worked in Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Düsseldorf, Vienna, Milan and other cities, later mainly in Düsseldorf.

In 1961 he staged the Freischütz in Düsseldorf , which, however, outraged viewers because Herlischka's version did not end happily like Kind's libretto and Weber's opera. This performance almost led to his resignation, despite his reputation, which had brought him the original version of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Shostakovich, staged in 1959 .

Alongside Walter Felsenstein , he was a pioneer in expressive-poetic theater. Its performances have been played over and over again over the years.

With his productions he made his compatriot, the composer Leoš Janáček , known in the West.
