The Bolle di Magadino ( Italian Bolle di Magadino ) are a nature reserve in Switzerland at the mouth of Ticino in the Lago Maggiore . It is an important biotope where numerous bird species nest (or stay during migrations).

history

The area was initially affected by containment work from 1888, which changed the course of the mouth of the Ticino into Lake Maggiore. The dams were completed around 1908 and in 1918 work began to reclaim the Magadino plain . As part of the drainage work, dikes were built in 1924 to regulate the course of the river. The land preserved in this way was used as cultivation area in the Second World War to counter the food shortage caused by the war with the elections plan .

After the war, the reclamation was continued, first in the 1950s with the construction of drainage canals, then with the construction of a dike on the Verzasca (1965). After this work, the vegetation in this area gradually changed and transformed from a predominantly swampy reed area into a predominantly wooded area. The site has been managed by the Bolle di Magadino Foundation since 1975 .

In 1979 the area became a "cantonal protected area" with an ordinance to protect the territory. The area of the Bolle was in 1982 in the Ramsar Convention of UNESCO for the protection of wetlands added.

In 1994 a station for ringing migratory birds was established, which is part of a network of observation centers and is connected to a European research project ( European-African Songbird Migration Network ) coordinated by the University of Oldenburg. The subject of the research is the migration of passerine birds between Europe and Africa . The research showed that the Bolle di Magadino area, despite its small size, is one of the migration and habitat areas most frequented by birds during migration.
