Bonaventure Elsevier

Bonaventura Elsevier (* 1583 in Leiden ; † September 17, 1652 ) was a Dutch bookseller and printer .

Life

Bonaventura Elsevier was the sixth son of Louis Elsevier and his wife Maria Duverdyn, but is sometimes taken to be the son of Matthys Elsevier . Bonaventura had been a bookseller since 1601 and five years later began a trip to Italy and traveled to Paris in 1608 , from there to travel back to Leiden the following year. In 1618 he began a six-year activity as a partner to Matthys Elsevier. In the next few years he also worked with Matthys' son Abraham Elsevier . In 1625 Bonaventura Elsevier bought Isaak Elsevier both the university printing works and the oriental printing works of Thomas Erpenius . As a result, both were appointed university printers the following year . In 1625 Bonaventure married Sara van Ceulen and had four sons from her; Daniel , Peter the Elder , Bonaventure the Younger and Wilhelm. He died on September 17, 1652 and was buried in the Pieterskerk in Leiden.
