Thomas Erpenius (Latinized van Erpen ; born September 11, 1584 in Gorinchem , † November 13, 1624 in Leiden ) was a Dutch theologian and orientalist .

Life

Erpenius studied theology at the University of Leiden , then devoted himself to the study of oriental languages, traveled to England, France, Italy and Germany, returned to his fatherland in 1612 and became professor of oriental languages ​​and interpreter for the States General in Leiden . He set up an Arab printing company, which after his death was sold by his widow Jacomine Buyes to the brothers Bonaventura and Abraham Elsevir (1592–1652), and whose business was incorporated under the name of the "oriental printing company".

His successor as professor of oriental studies at the University of Leiden was 1625 his student Jacobus Golius (1596-1667).
