content

The enthusiasm of the youth of Tanzania for their image of Afro-American hip-hop is the starting point for the Bongo Flava phenomenon . The film shows how a form of urban youth culture unfolds in Tanzania , which has meanwhile become a major social force and surpasses all other African musical styles in terms of cassette sales. In the film, the viewer gets to know the stars and starlets of the Tanzanian hip-hop scene and learns why these people live in poverty despite their obvious success.

background

The film was made as part of an ethnographic research project on hip-hop culture in Tanzania at the Institute for Ethnology at the Free University of Berlin . In 2001 and 2002, the authors spent a total of six months on site with the cultural practice of Bongo Flava . They gained insights by observing, occasionally living together with various Tanzanian rap musicians.

criticism

"An unobtrusive, very closely observing documentary film that convinces through the friendly closeness to its protagonists and through the ethnographic penetration of its subject."
