Bongo Maffin
Bongo Maffin was one of the most famous Kwaito bands in South Africa .
The group was formed in 1996 on the initiative of DJ Oscar . There were also Appleseed from Zimbabwe , who brought the reggae influence with him, and Stoan , who had previously sung with the Kwaito band Thebe . In 1997 Red ( Thandiswa Mazwai ) became a permanent member of Bongo Maffin after she had previously worked as a background singer and studio musician.
The lyrics of her songs tell of the everyday life of the young generation in South Africa, of love in times of AIDS , the longing for spiritual African roots and the need for an African self-confidence.
On November 29, 2003, Bongo Maffin performed at the 46664 benefit concert for the fight against AIDS. The band received international attention through collaborations with musicians such as Stevie Wonder , Chaka Khan and Skunk Anansie . From November 2004 there were repeated joint appearances with the Berlin raggaband Seeed . In 2004 Thandiswa Mazwai began a solo career.
In 2017 a reunion of the band was discussed.
