Bonifatius Church (Schenefeld)

The Bonifatiuskirche is the church of the Schenefeld parish in the Steinburg district in Schleswig-Holstein . It belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church District Rendsburg-Eckernförde.

The building is said to have been built during the Carolingian rule and to be the first Christian settlement in Holstein . According to the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History , however, it is controversial whether remains of the wall from the Carolingian era can actually be found on the church. The current building was not built until after the Thirty Years War .

Excavations

In 1932 an archaeological investigation was carried out by Alfred Kamphausen and in 1980 an excavation by the Archaeological State Office Schleswig-Holstein under the direction of Dr. Willi Kramer. This research team came to the conclusion that the Schenefelder Bonifatiuskirche cannot be regarded with certainty as one of the early medieval baptismal churches in northern Albingia .

During the excavations it was found that after a fire in 1628 the round tower was torn down and a square tower was built in its place. However, the foundation did not last, which is why the tower again demolished in 1732 and a lighter with roof turret was replaced.

Memorial stones and grave crosses on the older part of the cemetery, which is no longer used, directly at the church, bear witness to very old graves.
