The Bonn International School (BIS) is an international school in the Bad Godesberg district of Bonn , which was created in 1997 from the merger of two American and one British schools.

history

The school was born from the merger of the US Department of Defense supported Bonn American Elementary School (founded in 1952) and the Bonn American High School (founded in 1971) on the outskirts of American settlement and the British High School at the Friesdorfer road. Legally, the founding was a conversion of the British High School. The new school started operations on September 2, 1997 with around 500 students from 50 nations. In 2003 it received the provisional and in 2006 the final state recognition as a supplementary school . In January 2006 the new school location was moved into.

The school complex, located in the district of Plittersdorf on Martin-Luther-King-Straße , was built in 2005/06 (building section “Waves”), 2012 (building section “Agora”) and 2016/17 (building section “Crest”). The approximately 14,000 square meter leased property is located southeast of the Rheinaue and on the Rhine ; the former American settlement is adjacent to the west . The former “American Club” has also been part of the leased property since 2010. The school campus is fenced.

School structure

Early learning (kindergarten, nursery, pre-school)

Early Learning (EL) provides a challenging, stimulating and engaging environment for young children. The program balances between playful learning and targeted teacher guidance. 3- and 4-year-old students learn together in an age-appropriate environment. Each child is assigned a specific (fully qualified) teacher. Depending on their learning needs, interests and level of development, the children work and play in different groups throughout the day. Students are introduced to literacy, math, and phonetics.

EL5, for children who are 5 years old, has been specially developed to help children make a smooth transition to school.

Primary School [3]

In grades 1 - 5, learning in individual subjects such as language and mathematics is enriched by working in "Units of Inquiry", which combine content on important global topics. The students build their language skills in reading and writing through a workshop model. This model includes a focused direct teaching to encourage important learning points and independent work. Independent work gives students plenty of time to gradually develop into experienced readers and writers.

The program develops the strategies, knowledge and understanding children need to be successful in their future education. The students explore six different "Units of Inquiry" each year, each lasting around six weeks. These units combine and consolidate the skills and knowledge acquired in all specialist areas. Each unit is based on an important theme so that children learn to apply their skills to important global issues.

In grades 1 - 5 there are a maximum of 22 students per class with a student-teacher ratio of 9: 1.

Secondary School - Middle Years [4]

During these five years, students follow a curriculum known as the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). The curriculum is broad and balanced. It gives the students a solid foundation for the last two years of study leading to the next phase of their education.

During the five years of the MYP, students will experience a range of assessment types including essays, tests, presentations, and the final eAssessment in 10th grade.

An internationally recognized MYP certificate can be issued by the IB and acquired by grade 10 students who have successfully completed the eAssessment. This is the IB equivalent of GCSE in the British system or Mittlere Reife in the German system. All requirements for the secondary school leaving certificate can be met through the MYP curriculum without additional course work.

Secondary School - Diploma Years [5]

The diploma years at Bonn International School are the key to positioning students for the university and defining possible career paths. BIS students benefit from comprehensive advisory support and participation in the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (DP), a qualification for higher education in demand by leading universities around the world. The IB Diploma is a challenging two-year curriculum that meets the needs of curious, highly motivated, and mobile students.

The DP is based on the six subject groups Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Creativity. DP students wrote a technical paper to prepare them for university-level writing. You will also complete a Theory of Knowledge course, a unique critical thinking course that examines the nature of knowledge in different subject areas. In addition, the DP students meet the requirements of community, activity and service.

Students will only receive an IB diploma if they participate in both years of the program and pass demanding exams that are assessed by independent, external examiners. If the students have a defined educational path in mind, they can alternatively complete International Baccalaureate Certificate courses. Students following this route have more flexibility in the combination of subjects and levels they choose. These students take the same courses as the students taking the IB Diploma. However, IB certificate students are not required to study the theory of knowledge or complete the extended essay.

BIS awards a high school diploma to all students who have successfully completed grades 9 to 12. The BIS High School Diploma is equivalent to the high school diploma obtained in North America and recognized for university applications.
