Bonnier (or Bonniers ) is the name of a Swedish family of Jewish origin whose members have been active in the book trade, publishing, journalism, and modern mass media since the early 19th century.

The family can be proven originally in Bohemia in the 17th century. She moved to Dresden at the beginning of the 18th century. The name was changed by Gerhard Bonnier (Gutkind Hirschel) after moving to Denmark in 1801 in Bonnier. His three sons emigrated to Sweden.

The family business Bonnier AB is now run by Tor and Åke Bonnier, who belong to the fifth generation of Gerhard Bonnier's descendants.

origin

Gerhard Bonnier (1778–1862)

The earliest known ancestor is the German clothes dealer Jacob Schye (* 1674) from Soborten ( Sobědruhy in Czech ) in Bohemia . His son, the jeweler Löbel Schie (1718–1790), was the father of the coin dealer Löbel Salomon Hirschel (* 1745).

Hirschel's son, Gutkind Hirschel (1778–1862) moved to Copenhagen (1801) and changed his name to Gerhard Bonnier. Bonnier is the French translation of the first name "Gutkind" or possibly owes to the envoy Antoine Bonnier d'Alco. In Copenhagen, Gerhard Bonnier founded a lending library, then a bookstore and a publishing house.

Gerhard Bonnier's eldest son Adolf Bonnier (1806–1867) emigrated to Gothenburg in 1827 to expand the family business. He founded a library and in 1837 a publishing house (Albert Bonniers Förlag). The younger brothers David Felix Bonnier (1822–1881) and Albert Bonnier (1820–1900) moved to Stockholm to support the company.
