When the British forced the abolition of the slave trade in Bonny, the place switched its export products. In the 1850s it was already an important port for the export of palm oil and precious woods . From 1916, its importance as an export port was reduced by the newly established port of Port Harcourt , 56 kilometers upstream .

Bonny Island is a major shipping point for Nigerian oil. The region also gave its name to Bonny Light Oil . Large parts of the oil produced in the surrounding area are transported to Bonny via a pipeline and exported from there.
