The Bay of Bonny (English Bight of Bonny ), older name Bay of Biafra , is a bay at the eastern end of the Gulf of Guinea . It connects to the Bay of Benin and extends from the Niger river delta to Cape Lopez in Gabon .
The coasts of the states Nigeria , Cameroon , Equatorial Guinea , São Tomé and Príncipe as well as Gabon are located in whole or in part on the Bay of Bonny.
Surname
From 1849 to 1861 there was a British protectorate of Biafra Bay , which controlled what is now Bonny Bay.
The reason for the renaming of the bay by the Nigerian government was the secession of the southeastern provinces of Nigeria under the name Biafra between 1967 and 1970. After the Biafra war , the victorious central government wanted to delete the term Biafra from the maps for good. The city of Bonny in the Niger Delta has been the namesake of the bay since 1972 .
