Bonny L. Schumaker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bonny Laura Schumaker (* 1953 in Wisconsin ) is an American physicist and pilot and was involved in the construction of the LISA Pathfinder . In 2010 she founded the charitable organization "On Wings of Care", which is committed to animal welfare and environmental protection.

Origin and education

Schumaker grew up in Wisconsin , near Lake Michigan . She originally wanted to be a veterinarian, but then received a scholarship to study physics at California Polytechnic State University . Because of her love of mathematics, she moved to the California Institute of Technology for further studies , where she earned her doctorate in 1985. Your thesis supervisor was Kip Thorne , the research topic was theoretical studies on nonlinear quantum optics . She developed the mathematical theory of toroidal oscillations in fully relativistic spherical star models and worked on homodyne detection . In her work she looked at the effects of quantum physical interaction between photons through quadrature phase amplitudes . The procedure is known as the Caves- Schumaker formalism and has become a standard mathematical tool in optics, quantum optics and the research of gravitational waves . She worked for a year at CalTech as a research assistant and then went to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1986 . In 1988 she received the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award for her contributions to quantum optics . In 1996 she completed pilot training and flew for Continental Airlines. In the mid-1990s she became an instructor for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) . She developed the "Precision Optical INTerferometer in Space" (POINTS), which was proposed for the ASEPS-1 mission.

Career

Schumaker designed the LISA Pathfinder experiment while at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She worked on the interferometer development team. By 2008, Schumaker had completed three tests with experimental data and thus proved that the device can cope with the galactic foreground influences and can therefore accurately record extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI) signals from massive objects. The Pathfinder probe contains six gold-platinum cubes as test objects, whereby Schumaker predicted that a push of the strength of the wind pressure from a whisper 40 kilometers away is sufficient to cause a measurable displacement of a cube.

She worked on a novel method of observing changes in soil carbon by combining a combination of remote sensing, geographic classification, soil sample studies and simulations.

Schumaker left the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2011.

Wings of Care

In 2010, Schumaker founded the non-profit organization "On Wings of Care", which cares for animals. Schumaker uses her skills as a pilot to examine habitats and to help with rescue operations and reintroductions. She joined the board of directors of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society . Since the Deepwater Horizon Platform oil spill in 2010 , Schumaker has flown more than 600 hours to find and help animals in need. She flies a Cessna named "Bessie". In the event of environmental pollution, she is often the first helper on site. In August 2011 she noticed oil particles on the surface of the sea which came from the broken well of the Deepwater-Horizon . In 2015 she published the book The Story of Pellie Lou: A Pelican Who Survived the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill . Since then she has returned to the scene several times to support the local communities together with the press. After Hurricane Katrina in 2018, she flew over the Louisiana coastline to assess the consequences. Since then, she has devoted herself to investigating hydrocarbon emissions into the Mississippi Canyon.
