The Boom Basin ( English for Wummsbecken ) is a small basin in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Royal Society Range , it is on the north side of the Radian Ridge immediately west at the confluence of the Pipecleaner and Radiant Glaciers .
A team from the New Zealand Geological Survey heard a loud explosion noise here on December 3, 1977, the cause of which could not be clarified, but gave the basin its name.
