Uppsala boat grave

In 2018, the Uppsala boat grave , consisting of an intact and a damaged grave, from the Viking Age (800-1050 AD) was discovered in Old Uppsala in Uppland in Sweden and excavated in 2019. So far, only ten such boat graves ( Swedish Båtgravar ) are known in Sweden . Most are in Uppland, but also in Östergötland and Västmanland .

Two grave boats - one of them intact - were found under the medieval cellar and well of the old rectory. One may have been badly damaged by the construction of the basement. The wooden planks of the approximately seven-meter-long boat have largely crumbled, but some pieces of wood and iron nails have been preserved. In the stern of the intact boat lay the bones of a man, along with the grave goods, among other things, a sword , a spear , a shield and an ornate comb . In the bow were the bones of a dog and a horse.

The researchers assume that the deceased held a high rank during his lifetime, as only one led to burial in a boat. Most of the Vikings were cremated.
