The village of Bopolu , still called Bopora in the 19th century , is located in the western part of the West African Republic of Liberia and is 90 kilometers as the crow flies northeast of the capital Monrovia . Bopolu has been the capital of Gbarpolu County , which is economically dominated by mining and agriculture, since 2001. Before that, the area belonged to the adjacent Lofa County to the north . The city of Bopolu is also the administrative center of the Bopolu District . There is an outpost of the UN mission for Liberia on site. In the 19th century, Bopolu was the center of power of a confederation of the indigenous West African peoples Gola , Loma , Dei and Vai , which was referred to as the "Kingdom of Suehn-Bopolu" and which stood out in the trade in slaves, ivory and European imported goods. King Bosan or Sao Boso (1775–1836) appeared several times as an influential mediator in land acquisitions by the Mississippi Colonization Society . The relatively sparsely populated county was a center of the civil war refugees who remained in the country after the Civil War. Several refugee camps have been set up in the vicinity of the city of Bopolu, which are supported by the UN and aid organizations.

The population of the city of Bopolu was 2908 on the reference date (2008).

The technical infrastructure is in the process of being rebuilt; this affects around 50 destroyed or collapsed bridges in the transport sector. There is currently only a secondary road connection to the capital Monrovia with a branch to Tubmanburg . The place also has a landing pad for small aircraft; a hospital and several schools were built.
