Borceguí Island

Borceguí Island ( Spanish Islote Borceguí , literally translated half-boot island ; in the United Kingdom Buskin Rocks ) is an ice-free island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located 1.5 km off the north coast of Elephant Island between Cape Yelcho and the Gibbous Rocks .

The crew of the Argentine tug Chiriguano gave the island its descriptive name, based on its shape, during a voyage to the Antarctic that lasted from 1954 to 1955. This was translated into English by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1972 . The alternative English-language name comes from the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee of November 3, 1971. The background was surveys by the British Joint Services Expedition (1970-1971), which Borceguí Island had identified as the largest of a group of cliff rocks .
